CLAY: How Hard Can It Be?
"How hard can it be?", is the question asked by the curious and the capable. It defines the spirit of trying. Of attempting. Of action.
People who work with clay know that this question floats on the top of all that they observe. As ceramic artists we see clay in all its iterations (a lump, in process, stark naked, finished) and we are drawn to the potential. Even when we witness a master ceramic artist struggle, we look to try with our own hands. When we are in a creative shop and see a finished piece and are in awe, we still make a mental note to try it out. To investigate the texture or figure out how the join works. And as we sit at the work bench and dream up a form, we start with a conviction that we will make it. Because, how hard can it be?
The 2026 presenters are Vin Arora, Lael Chmelyk, Grace Han, Jai Sallay-Carrington and Jesse Birch.
In connection with the symposium, pre and post event activities include expanded workshops with the presenters at various locations throughout the province, as well as exhibits within the lower mainland.
